Ellis speared the last bite of chicken on her plate, lavishly coating it in a puddle of sauce before eating it.
“Okay Renie, you win one point for this evening, but only one mind you. Don’t get cocky on me. The food has been extraordinary for a banquet function.”
Renie raised one eyebrow. “At five hundred dollars a plate, the kitchen can’t be serving shake and bake chicken. Although you should’ve had the prime rib slow cooked with rock salt. Chicken is so passé.’ ”
“Five hundred dollars a plate,” Ellis sputtered in a loud stage whisper. “Are you kidding me? There are ten people at each table. Your Dad bought tickets for two tables. Ten thousand dollars for picking up the tab for a dinner is definitely out of my orbit, but it is quite generous of him.” She pushed her glasses back up the bridge of her nose. “I still can’t believe I ate a five hundred dollar chicken breast. I should’ve taken it home and had it bronzed.”
“Welcome to the big time, girly,” said Renie. “Would you puleeeese take those dumb glasses off. I spent ten minutes on your eye make-up to coordinate with that get-up you dredged out of the black hole in my closet.”
“I told you not to bother. I’m wearing my glasses, so I can see. Duh. Although they are starting to rub on the skin behind my ears. Only six more weeks and I can start wearing my contacts again. But when the slave boy auction commences, I’m taking them off to give my ears a break.”
“Ellis! That’s when you do want to see! ”
“Is not.”
“Is too.”
“Why are we best friends?” said Ellis.
“Because we’ve been best friends since the fifth grade and we’re too damn lazy to spend the time making another best friend,” said Renie.
“Yeah, you’re right,” Ellis said as she pushed back her chair. “I’m going to head for the bar. I’ll need something to do, when the Gong Show gets underway in a few minutes.”
“It’s for a good cause.”
“I know. I know. Don’t worry I promise I’ll maintain a neutral facial expression, when women as old as my mother are engaging in a tug of war over some young stud. However my dear, if any panties are thrown on stage, I’m exempt.

I hadn’t thought of the Gong Show in a long time either. It just popped up unexpectedly on my radar
screen. Right now I am so hungry I probably would pay $500 for that chicken breast.

Hahaha! Nothing like the banter between best friends, Carol. You have a gift for writing realistic dialogue, my friend. What a throwback to read The Gong Show in this post, though! Looking forward to the next ep in this series. And, I agree with everyone else. That chicken dish is worth the price! 🙂
