Involuntarily my breath whistled out in a splurge of relief. After I had begun eating this eerie woman’s meal and realized she wasn’t eating too, I was reminded of my first jump off the high diving board, when I was twelve. Two seconds into the plunge I changed my mind. Oh crap, too late girly! Different scenario, same reaction with my first mouthful and here I thought I had matured beyond twelve. I intended to be remain young at heart, but come on—-Twelve?
At my core I’m a bon viviant, who is stirred by the enjoyment of food and drink. My mind leaped from France to Rome to steal and adapt a classic line—When in Romania, do as the Romanians do. So I continued eating the steaming soup full of hunky meatballs and the slice of fluffy textured bread.
Silence was the music of the evening. Apparently Romanians don’t converse while eating. However, in the middle of my second glass of wine—yes, I had given up my pledge of no more alcohol— I raised my goblet and proclaimed, “Here’s to meatballs.’
Arching one eyebrow Luminia gave me a look. Yep, a Romanian look. I translated it as, “I wanna suck your blood.” But in fact she was indicating she wanted a refill. I laid the blame for my misinterpretation upon recently reading all the Twilight books back to back. To soften the edges of my erupting paranoia I refreshed my own drink.
A few minutes later BOOM, I stood up and began swishing my skirt in a twirly fashion like a little girl. Also I wanted a pink strawberry ice cream cone right this minute and I wasn’t taking no for an answer. I stopped swishing and stamped my foot.
Lumina smiled. I raised my arms signaling, Touch Down! I bent and looked under the table. Where did I put my pom poms?
Luminia spoke as she began blowing out the candles, ” The moon is high and you are ready now. There is a portal open in your wall of inhibitions. Your Inner Child is freed, but time is short. Sit down.”
I heard a click and then there was a glow reminiscent of a lava lamp, but it’s colors were more iridescent and ethereal.
From a pocket in her skirt she drew out a deck of oversized cards and placed them against her breast. “Let there be wisdom. Let there be light to open my sight.”
She spread the deck out on the table and briefly enfolded my head in her hands and then said, “Pick three cards.”
The moon was shining through the window behind her. Colors from the lamp skipped on the table and bounced off the walls. Lumina’s silver eyes glowed like the Cheshire Cat. A peaceful clearness settled over me. My breathing slowed and I could feel my individual blood cells streaming through my veins in my arms. Without hesitation I knew which three cards were mine.
Picking up the first card she said, ” Aaah the Lightening card indicating the entry of powerful forces of change in your life. Be prepared. This change is imminent and perhaps there will be a total paradigm shift. Do not resist. This is not the type of change to fight. When you receive this card it signals great things are happening behind the scenes.”
Lumina turned over the second card. ” The Sun card is telling you sweetly and simply, stop what you are doing and go have fun. Stop worrying. Celebrate the now and who you are at this juncture of time. Answers will come, but only when you have taken the time to play. There is always another tomorrow, when the sun will rise and warm the earth again.”
Lumina flipped over the third card. ” The Fire card arrives as your ally. It represents optimism. You will be rightly inspired and guided to move forward and take confident and assertive action to reach your desired goal. So envision your path with optimism and it will be the magical spark. It is important to share that optimism and enthusiasm with others, which will multiply your good fortune:
Lumina closed her eyes. I began to speak, ” Well what I would like to know—.”
She cut me off. “No questions, because I have no answers. I have given you what you are to know. It is up to you to open your heart and apply the knowledge.”
“But,” I began.
She put her fingers to her lips and rose from the table. ” It is time for you to sleep.”
Opening the cupboard she took out a little box. ” Here are some special truffles. They will help you sleep and to remember in the morning what I have told you.” She opened the door. I had no choice, but to leave.
Back in my room I opened the box. As I popped one of the dark chocolate truffles in my mouth and as it was melting, I thought just what are in ‘special’ truffles anyway? Oh crap, too late girly.
