Tea, Chocolate, and Mothers

May 9, 2013 by Carol Leave a Comment

mom-tea-chocolateWhat do these three nouns have in common? Without editing, what’s your tippy top first thought? Comfort was the first word that popped up like a jack in the box in my mind. Obviously mothers are our first contact with comfort. If we are lucky, we can continue to find comfort from our mothers into adulthood. But if one is not so fortunate or there is a need for a moment of private or quick comfort, then a cup of tea or a fine chocolate is a splendid solution.

Sometimes what is needed is not so much a sympathetic ear or hug, but a refocusing break. The act of quietly brewing a cup of tea and taking a few moments to savor it, allows the mind an opportunity to shift perspective, to become more reflective. If the need to take a break is not a happy one, the act of d a mundane task can stop the increasing tension from reaching a crescendo. If the situation is a happy one, then the reason for taking a tea timeout is even more precious. Negative aspects of life suck up too much energy and attention in our lives. So it behooves us all to extend and extol the upswing moments, add a little rock and roll piano to the moment.

Chocolate is the heat seeking missile of comfort giving. It’s instant. As Americans we love instant gratification. I know I can speak for women, chocolate is the ultimate fix for everything. Yes that is a black and white statement, just like there is white chocolate and dark chocolate. Despite the fact chocolate produces euphoria, there is no chance of getting arrested for being in possession or a user. Like love there are numerous adjectives to describe chocolate, but no words can truly express its attributes.

You are probably asking where is she going with all of this, like who cares. Okay get ready, here comes the full circle bottom line. For something different, loving and comforting for Mother’s Day or Mom’s birthday, organize a celebratory tea and chocolate tasting. It’s easy, because it is simply trying a variety of teas—-I might suggest Wild Goose Tea—laughing—- matched with a variety of chocolates. Then everyone shares what they think. What could be easier. Plus you and your Mom will be perched on the cutting edge of what’s new in the culinary world. That’s a whole lot cheaper and just as classy as a Prada handbag.
